It was fantastic to be part of the Dream Big pilot programme recently held at Leighton Academy in Crewe, where Year 5 pupils were given an exciting and hands-on opportunity to explore careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM). I was proud to be involved in the Enterprise zone, engaging with young people and supporting activities that sparked their interest in the world of work.
This inspiring project is closely linked to the rebuild of Leighton Hospital, which is a major investment in our local health services. The initiative is part of the Healthier Futures team’s Social Value Plan, which aims to create lasting benefits for our community by enhancing the STEM curriculum for 20,000 local young people over the next four years.
Around 60 pupils took part in a full day of immersive activities linked to four potential career paths – health, engineering, enterprise, and construction. It was inspiring to see their enthusiasm and energy throughout the day as they asked questions, solved problems, and thought creatively about their futures.
The day was made possible thanks to fantastic collaboration between Robertson, Bentley Motors, BAM Construction, Mitie, Cheshire East Council, Akerlof, and Urenco.
It was genuinely rewarding to work with such a dedicated team and to help create a memorable experience for the pupils. Seeing their curiosity and ambition grow was a clear reminder of why investing in our young people’s futures is so important.
