It was a pleasure to attend Nantwich Players Theatre earlier this week to see their fantastic production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, directed by the talented Garth Jones.
This classic play is a tale of magic, betrayal, love and forgiveness. Set on a remote island near Italy, it follows Prospero – the one-time Duke of Milan – and his daughter Miranda, who live with the mischievous sprite Ariel and the wild and earthy Caliban. Prospero, now a powerful magician, conjures a mighty storm that brings his enemies to the island and sets the story in motion.
What follows is a gripping blend of drama and comedy: a conspiracy to murder the King of Naples, a drunken plot to kill Prospero, and a blossoming romance between Miranda and Ferdinand, the King’s son. Ultimately, the play ends on a redemptive note, as forgiveness triumphs and the characters return home, changed by their experiences.
The production was brilliant – a real credit to everyone involved. I’m always amazed by how the cast manage to learn and deliver such complex lines with confidence and emotion. Their performances brought energy and heart to this timeless story.
For those parking in the Love Lane car park, the new evening parking charges across Cheshire East were an obvious concern – something I strongly oppose – but despite this it was fantastic to see a sell-out performance with a full house on the night.
The show runs until 5th July 2025, starting at 7:45pm. Tickets, priced at £11, are on sale from Ticketsource (01270 600727) or online: https://www.ticketsource.com/nantwich-players

The theatre’s next production is Alison Carr’s The Last Quiz Night on Earth, running from 10th – 13th July 2025. Set on the eve of an impending apocalypse, this darkly comedic play follows a group of pub quiz regulars as they confront their pasts, their regrets, and the ultimate question: what would you do if it were your last night on Earth?
Tickets for The Last Quiz Night on Earth, priced at £9, will be on sale from Ticketsource (01270 600727) or online: https://www.ticketsource.com/nantwich-players/?eventref=Quiz
