Help Rebuild the Heart of Crewe: Grants Up to £30K

Posted on 28 May 2025

Let’s Bring Crewe Town Centre to Life

If you’ve ever said, “Crewe needs more shops, cafés, or things to do” – now’s your chance to make it happen.

A new initiative, Open in Crewe, is offering capital grants of up to £30,000 to support local businesses, community groups, and charities in setting up shop in Crewe town centre. Whether you’re a sole trader with a fresh idea or an established organisation looking to expand, this scheme is designed to help you turn empty premises into vibrant spaces that benefit our whole community.

💡 Why It Matters

Crewe town centre has faced its challenges in recent years, with too many empty units and not enough footfall. But things are changing – and this is your opportunity to be part of that transformation.

I recently met with the Business Engagement Manager at Cheshire East Council to discuss how this scheme is more than just talk – it’s action. It’s part of a wider mission, backed by the government’s Towns Fund, to regenerate Crewe with investment, job creation, and renewed community pride.

💷 What Support Is Available?

Depending on the length of your lease, you could apply for:

  • £3,000 for leases between 28 days and 12 months

  • £7,500 for 12–24 months

  • £12,000 for 24–36 months

  • £20,000 for 36–48 months

  • £30,000 for 48 months or more

In some cases, grants of up to £50,000 may be available for properties in key locations.

You’ll also receive business support to help your idea succeed long-term – from planning and setup to marketing and operations.

🛍️ Who Can Apply?

The scheme is open to:

  • Local businesses

  • Charities

  • Community interest companies

  • Social enterprises

  • Sole traders

  • Voluntary and community groups

As long as you have a lease on a vacant unit (empty for at least 3 months), a clear plan, and the drive to get going, this opportunity is for you.

Applicants must also:

  • Employ fewer than 249 people

  • Have a turnover below £50 million

  • Match at least 20% of the grant

  • Have a business bank account

  • Be in good standing with the council

🛠️ What Can the Grant Be Used For?

The funding can help cover costs like:

  • Fitting out or improving your premises

  • Shop front upgrades

  • Essential equipment and furnishings

  • Lighting, flooring, electricals, signage – and more

This is practical support designed to remove the barriers to opening a space in the heart of Crewe.

🏆 Making a Real Difference

We’ve already seen success stories. Local businesses like XO Hair & Beauty Academy and Oden Lounge are examples of what’s possible when passionate people are given the right support. They’ve turned empty units into places that bring people together – and more importantly, they’ve shown that change is possible.

Now it’s your turn.

📣 Get Involved

What would you bring to Crewe town centre? A café with a twist? A creative studio? A community hub? A shop full of local crafts?

If you’ve got a great idea and the will to make it real, don’t wait.

👉 Visit openincrewe.co.uk to find out more, check your eligibility, and apply today.

Together, we can bring Crewe town centre back to life – one brilliant idea at a time.
