Sorting Out the Gate and Illegal Encampment Issues at Frank Webb Avenue and Brooklands Grove

Posted on 13 June 2025

As your local councillor, I am committed to responding swiftly and effectively to the concerns of residents. Recently, I was alerted to an issue affecting the field between Frank Webb Avenue and Brooklands Grove, where an illegal encampment had been set up.

Upon receiving these reports, I immediately contacted the Cheshire and Warrington Traveller Team. I am pleased to report they acted quickly and the group was evicted very quickly. It is important that we protect our community spaces and maintain a safe environment for everyone.

However, to prevent similar situations from happening again, I asked Cheshire East Council to look at ways to secure the field. Despite following this up, I did not receive a clear response. So, you can imagine my surprise when a large gate was installed across the field.

While the intention behind installing the gate is understandable, it quickly became clear that it was causing significant problems. The gate blocked access for residents, particularly those with prams, mobility scooters, and anyone needing to walk through the area easily. This was understandably frustrating for many.

Recognising this, I have raised the issue urgently with Cheshire East Council to ensure that the gate is modified or replaced with a solution that balances security with accessibility.

In the meantime, I took direct action myself. I cleared a path through the barrier to make sure residents can continue to access the field safely while a permanent solution is found.

Separately, I also raised concerns about damaged fencing affecting access to the field on Frank Bott Avenue near Windsor Avenue. Thanks to Guinness Housing for their quick response in repairing the fence and making the area secure.

I want to thank everyone who came forward with their concerns. Your voices are crucial in helping me advocate effectively on your behalf. Please continue to get in touch with any issues affecting our community. Together, we can keep our neighbourhood safe, welcoming, and accessible for all.
