Dear Resident,
Important Information – SP Energy Networks Capacity Improvement Works Near Leighton Hospital, Crewe
SP Energy Networks owns and operates the electricity network in your region and will soon be carrying out work in your area. We will be installing new underground electricity cables to support Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s ambitious programme to create a health and care neighbourhood in Crewe, centred around the development of the new Leighton Hospital. This state-of-the-art facility will serve the clinical and care needs of our communities.
Our works will ensure a reliable and resilient electricity supply for the future hospital. This will involve building a new electricity substation off Flowers Lane and connecting it to Leighton Hospital via a series of new underground cables along Brian Palin Way, Tottys Hall Way, Bob Brown Way and Flowers Lane.
We have appointed a contractor to deliver the work and have developed our traffic management plans in close partnership with Cheshire East Council to ensure we minimise disruption to the local community. We are also working closely with Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to maintain access to the existing Leighton Hospital and to keep people informed.
The work will be completed in stages, and we expect it to be completed by late July 2025.
What will the work involve?
From 6 June 2025, we will be starting work to install the first section of cable along Brian Palin Way and Tottys Hall Way. The work will involve digging a trench and installing cable ducts along Brian Palin Way, moving eastwards up to the junction with Tottys Hall Way. Our work will then move onto Tottys Hall Way, progressing northwards towards the junction with Bob Brown Way.
Typically, we will be digging around 25 to 40 metres each day before installing the ducts, filling in the trench and moving on to the next section. This will help us to minimise disruption and limit activity to smaller areas at different points throughout the work.
Our standard working hours will be 07:00 until 17:00, up to seven days a week. This will enable us to complete the cable work as efficiently and safely as possible, and to minimise disruption over an extended period of time. There may be some periods of time during these hours when you may not see activity taking place on site – for instance, where we need to wait for reinstated tarmac to dry.
All the work being undertaken, along with the associated traffic management plans, has been agreed with Cheshire East Council.
What does this mean for me?
We’re committed to keeping any impact on local communities as low as possible, but there will be some temporary disruption while we complete this important work.
From Friday 6 June, we will be introducing a full road closure on Brian Palin Way, so we can work safely in the road. A diversion route and signage will be in place. Our work on Brian Palin Way is scheduled for completion by early July 2025.
At that point, we will move on to Tottys Hall Way. This section of work involves a single-lane road closure, with temporary traffic lights to help manage the flow of traffic safely. Our work on Tottys Hall Way is scheduled for completion by late July 2025.
Access to properties – including for emergency services and the hospital – will be maintained throughout the duration of our work. If our team is working outside or near your property, we may ask for vehicles to be moved so that we can complete our work safely.
We do not expect electricity supplies to be interrupted as a result of this work.
Keeping you informed
Our work locations and traffic management plans will be clearly signposted in advance, so you know how the changes may affect your journey. Road signs will remain in place for the duration of the works.
