Today’s Full Council meeting took place at the outstanding SKA Observatory at Jodrell Bank – a fantastic facility and a real asset to Cheshire East. It was a privilege to attend such an inspiring venue for a meeting of the council.
One of the items on the agenda was a motion brought forward by Cllr Anthony Harrison, our Armed Forces Champion, proposing the introduction of a National Cadet Forces Day. I was very pleased to support this motion, which aims to celebrate and raise awareness of the important role cadet forces play in our communities.
The idea is for Cadet Forces Day to be held annually on the Tuesday of Armed Forces Week. It would provide a dedicated opportunity to recognise the work of cadet organisations like the Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, RAF Air Cadets, Volunteer Cadet Corps, and Combined Cadet Force. These groups support young people aged 12 to 18 to gain valuable skills, grow in confidence, and develop leadership and teamwork in a supportive and structured environment.
The proposed day would see cadets delivering assemblies in schools, wearing their uniforms with pride, and opening their units to local communities through open evenings and engagement activities. It would help increase awareness, strengthen community links, and support recruitment into these fantastic youth organisations.
The motion also called for a joint letter from the Leader, Deputy Leader, and Leader of the Conservative Group to be sent to the Armed Forces Minister, Luke Pollard MP, showing Cheshire East Council’s support for the campaign.
While not all cadets go on to join the Armed Forces, the values and experiences they gain make a lasting impact and contribute hugely to society.
I was proud to support this motion and reaffirm our commitment to recognising the contributions of all parts of our Armed Forces community – including its future generation.
