It was a real pleasure to spend time with the brilliant Year 5 pupils from Leighton Academy this week, as we joined forces for a community litter pick around Leighton Brook Park.
The morning began with engaging conversations, where we explored the importance of looking after our environment. The pupils were full of thoughtful questions and ideas about reusing, recycling, and taking pride in their community.
We were also joined by local resident and environmental advocate, Anna, who gave a fantastic talk on reducing plastic use and how small changes in our daily lives can lead to a big impact. Her message was well received by everyone, and it really set the tone for the morning.
We headed across Leighton Brook Park, armed with litter pickers and bin bags. It was brilliant to see the enthusiasm and teamwork from the students as they helped to tidy the area and make a real difference. Their energy and sense of responsibility were truly inspiring.
The Year 5 pupils were incredibly keen and full of energy throughout the day. Their eagerness to learn, ask questions, and get hands-on with the litter pick was inspiring to see. It’s clear that these young people care deeply about their community and the environment, and they showed real pride in helping to keep Leighton Brook Park clean and welcoming.
A huge thank you to the staff at Leighton Academy for their support, to Anna for sharing her knowledge and passion, and especially to the Year 5 pupils for their fantastic efforts.
It’s always encouraging to see the next generation so engaged in caring for their local environment. The future is in good hands.
I must also thank Crewe Town Council and Cheshire East Council Waste and Recycling team for their help providing bags and equipment, and for taking away the waste collected.
Days like this show the real value of community partnerships – where schools, residents and local representatives come together with a shared purpose. Leighton Brook Park looks all the better for it, and the conversations we had will hopefully leave a lasting impression on the young people involved. I’m proud to support projects like this and look forward to more opportunities to work with local schools and residents to care for our green spaces.
