I had a fantastic afternoon in the sunshine today, joined by the brilliant Year 5 pupils from Leighton Academy for our annual community litter pick in Leighton Brook Park.

It was wonderful to spend time speaking with the students about how they feel about our local area and to hear their thoughts on the importance of protecting the environment. We had some really positive conversations about sustainability, reducing waste, and how everyone can play a role in looking after the community spaces we all share and enjoy.

The enthusiasm from the pupils was incredible from the very beginning. They were eager to get involved and worked extremely hard throughout the afternoon, collecting around 15 bags of litter from the areas surrounding the playground and woodland.

Their dedication and teamwork were fantastic to see, and they should all be very proud of the difference they made.

This year marks the fifth year I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Leighton Academy on this litter pick initiative. One of the most encouraging things we’ve noticed over the years is that the amount of rubbish collected has steadily reduced. That is a real sign that our community is continuing to be cleaner, and more welcoming.

It really shows what can be achieved when local people, schools, and community groups work together towards a shared goal. Small actions can make a big difference, and today was another excellent example of community spirit in action.

A huge thank you goes to Mrs Smith, all the teachers and support staff who helped organise and support the event, and of course to the fantastic Year 5 pupils who gave up their time and energy to help care for our local environment.

I hope everyone has a wonderful and well-deserved half term break!
Cllr James Pratt
