Our roads are unsafe and need proper repairs!

West Street and Minshull New Road are full of potholes and broken surfaces, creating daily risks for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

As your local councillor for St Barnabas ward, I regularly report road issues and raise residents’ concerns with Highways, but despite these efforts, these main routes remain in a dire state.

While I was pleased to secure the recent full resurfacing of Underwood Lane and smaller improvements on other streets, temporary patching has not solved the problem on our major roads. Our community deserves safe, reliable, and properly repaired roads.

Subject: Urgent Request for Repairs to West Street and Minshull New RoadDear Cheshire East Highways Team, I am writing as a local resident in Crewe to request urgent repairs to West Street, from Dunwoody Way to Merrils Bridge, and Minshull New Road, from West Street to Badger Avenue. Both roads are in a very poor state, with numerous potholes and uneven surfaces. Previous patching has been repeatedly carried out but does not last, and the roads continue to deteriorate. While we understand that inspections are carried out every three months, the outcome of these inspections does not result in the roads being made safe, and no substantial or long-term work is ever undertaken. This leaves the carriageways hazardous for everyone who uses them. The current condition of the roads is a serious concern for all road users. Motorists risk damage to their vehicles and are forced to make sudden manoeuvres to avoid potholes. Cyclists face an even greater hazard from the uneven surfaces and deep potholes. On Minshull New Road, pedestrians and residents with parked cars are frequently exposed to debris being flicked up from damaged sections of the road, creating a constant safety risk. These roads are important local routes that residents rely on daily. The ongoing cycle of temporary patching is not a long-term solution, and the lack of proper investment has left the community frustrated and concerned for their safety. I respectfully request that Cheshire East Highways carry out a thorough inspection and implement durable repairs, ideally full resurfacing, to bring these roads up to a safe and acceptable standard. A clear timeline for these works would also be greatly appreciated by residents, so that the local community can see meaningful action being taken.
