I’m delighted to share that the new football goal posts have now been installed on the grass field at Leighton Brook Park.
This has been a project that has taken a while to get to completion, but one that was inspired and driven by local young people. Many told me they wanted somewhere to play football on a proper grass pitch rather than always using the hard surface Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). They wanted a space where they could meet friends, keep active and enjoy the game.
To help move the project forward, I asked local young people to carry out a community consultation. They did a fantastic job, collecting more than 40 responses in support of the proposal, with no objections received. Cheshire East Council then carried out a further consultation with nearby residents, which also received no objections.
The final challenge was securing funding, as there was no budget available through the normal parks maintenance programme. As a member of the Cheshire East Safer Partnership, I was pleased to put the project forward, and we successfully secured the funding needed to make it happen.
The new goal posts will not only provide a great facility for local children and young people to enjoy throughout the year, but they will also be used during The Wishing Well’s weekly Street Sports sessions at the park, helping even more young people take part in organised sporting activities.
I would like to thank everyone who helped bring this project to life, especially the young people who supported the consultation, Kenny and Sophia from Guinness, Ray at Crewe Alexandra FC, and everyone else involved.
It’s fantastic to see another community-led improvement delivered at Leighton Brook Park, and I hope the new goal posts will be enjoyed by local families for many years to come.
