Following a recent road traffic accident on Minshull New Road, the safety railings outside Leighton Academy were removed due to damage. Understandably, this raised concerns among parents, staff and local residents about the safety of children at the school gates.
Although these barriers might seem small, they serve an important purpose – helping prevent children from running directly into the road during the busy drop-off and pick-up times. Their absence was a real cause for concern.
After being made aware of the issue, I raised it immediately with Cheshire East Highways and pushed for urgent action to ensure the railings were reinstated without delay. I’m pleased to report that, thanks to this pressure, the barriers have now been replaced and are back in place.
This repair is a welcome step in the right direction – but it is just one part of the wider conversation about road safety outside Leighton Academy. If you’ve been following my updates here or receive my regular newsletter, you’ll know that this area has been let down in the past when it comes to effective safety measures.
That’s why I’ve been continuing to campaign for broader improvements around this area, which were supposed to be included in the North West Crewe Roads Package (NWCP) which was completed last July. Further meetings are already planned to keep this issue high on the agenda and to push for long-term solutions that will protect children and families travelling to and from school.
As always, I’ll keep residents updated on progress, please consider subscribing to my email newsletter – and I’d welcome any thoughts or suggestions you have. Please do get in touch if there’s something you’d like to raise.
Keeping our children safe on their way to school must always be a priority.
