Dear Sir/Madam
SP Energy Networks capacity improvement works near Leighton Hospital, Crewe
SP Energy Networks owns and operates the electricity network in your region. We are writing to update you on the work that we are carrying out in your area.
We are currently installing new underground electricity cables to support Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s creation of a health and care neighbourhood in Crewe, centred around the development of the new Leighton Hospital. This state-of-the-art facility will serve the clinical and care needs of our communities, and our work in the area will ensure a reliable and resilient electricity supply for the future hospital. Our work involves building a new electricity substation off Flowers Lane and connecting it to Leighton Hospital via a series of new underground cables along Brian Palin Way, Tottys Hall Way, Bob Brown Way and Flowers Lane. We expect the project to be completed later in 2025.
The work is being carried out in stages and we recently completed the first stage of work on Brian Palin Way and initial work on Tottys Hall Way.
We will soon be progressing our next stage of work on Tottys Hall Way.
What does the work involve?
In late July we will finish our work on the northern section of Tottys Hall Way. At this stage we will be moving on to the adjoining junction with Bob Brown Way, moving eastwards towards Flowers Lane.
The work involves digging a trench and installing cable ducts along the Tottys Hall Way junction and Bob Brown Way. We will be digging around 25 to 40 metres before installing the ducts, filling in the trench and moving on to the next section. At a point later in time we will need to come back to pull in the cables through the ducts and join them.
Our standard working hours will be 07:00 until 17:00 hours, up to seven days a week. This will enable us to complete the cable work as efficiently and safely as possible, and to minimise disruption over an extended period of time. There may be some periods of time during these hours when you may not see activity taking place on site – for instance, where we need to wait for reinstated tarmac to dry.
How will this affect me?
We’re committed to keeping any impact on local communities as low as possible, but there will be some temporary disruption while we complete this important work.
From Tuesday 22 July, we will be closing the junction between Tottys Hall Way and Bob Brown Way. A diversion route and signage will be in place to assist road users with their journeys. Our work at the junction is scheduled for completion by late July 2025.
On 28 July, we will be moving on to the adjoining junction with Bob Brown Way, we will be introducing a full road closure on the section of Bob Brown Way, between the junction with Tottys Hall Way and the junction with Flowers Lane. A diversion route and signage will be in place to assist road users with their journeys. This stage of our work is scheduled for completion by mid-August 2025.
All traffic management plans have been developed in close partnership with Cheshire East Council to minimise disruption to the local community. We are working in close partnership with Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to maintain access to the existing Leighton Hospital and to keep people informed.
Access to properties – including for emergency services and the hospital – will be maintained throughout the duration of our work. If our team is working outside or near your property, we may ask for vehicles to be moved so that we can complete our work safely.
We do not expect electricity supplies to be interrupted as a result of this work.
Keeping you informed
