Support Road Safety Improvements on Minshull New Road

Minshull New Road, outside Leighton Academy primary school and nursery, is becoming increasingly busy as 1,250 new homes are currently under construction nearby. The footpath from Rolls Avenue to the school is narrow, overgrown, and often flooded, making it difficult for children, parents with pushchairs, and other pedestrians to use safely.

Despite approved road safety improvements as part of the 2019 planning process for the North West Crewe Package, no work has been carried out outside the school. Councillor Goldsmith even stated at the scheme’s opening in 2024 that the works had created a safer environment for children – a claim not supported by the facts.  Nothing was done.

Over the past five years, there have been six recorded collisions along this stretch, including one in April 2025 directly outside the school, which destroyed the safety railings at the entrance. Reference to the proposed safety measures has since disappeared from the NWCP website.

We need Cheshire East Highways to implement a suitable road safety scheme here, in consultation with residents, whether or not it is the originally planned design.

Minshull New Road is becoming increasingly busy as 1,250 new homes are currently under construction nearby. The footpath from Rolls Avenue to the school is very narrow, forcing pedestrians to walk single file, and presents significant difficulties for those with pushchairs or mobility aids. It is often overgrown with bushes and floods in wet weather, making it impassable without stepping onto the muddy verge. These conditions make it unsafe for pedestrians, particularly schoolchildren. I understand that road safety improvements were approved as part of the 2019 planning process for the North West Crewe Package, including planning application 18/6118N and other associated applications, and were intended to make this stretch of road safer. Despite this, no works have been delivered outside the school. Councillor Goldsmith stated at the scheme’s opening in July 2024: "These works have also helped to create a safer environment for children coming to and from Leighton Academy - another positive aspect of this worthy project." In reality, no improvements were made.
